Vijayanagar (circa 1446-1520 AD) was the arguably one of the greatest cities of the Medieval world founded by two brothers Harihar and Bukka of Sangam dynasty near Tungabhadra river of Andhra pradesh.
2.It had seven lines of fortifications around the whole city which is truly incredible feat of engineering. Even the massive Jerusalem had only three lines which Romans found intimidating and took 47 days to defeat.
- This vast fortification was build to defeat the age old tactic of cutting supply lines to the city thereby starving the people inside thus forcing the opponent to surrender. The farmlands were inside these fortifications which made it impossible to conquer.
Mortar was not used anywhere to build the walls but the chiseled stones were neatly wedged to fit each other without compromising the strength.
- Vijaynagar had close trading relation with outer world with have hosted travelers like Abdul razzak and Domingo paes and others who left for us a fine account of what they saw. Paes calls it ''the most provided city in the world''.
- The sprawling city had ingenuous systems of water supply and irrigation
What remains today of Vijaynagar is a small place called Hampi and is major tourist attraction in Karnataka.
Krishn dev rai of the Tulav dynasty(?) was probably the greatest monarch of the medieval India. He built the beautiful Virupaksh temple. He prided in calling himself ''Founder of the Yavana kingdom'' on earth; the reason i do not know till now. He was contemporary of Mohammed Tuglaq.
- The remains of the city are now preserved by ASI and have been declared UNESCO world heritage site.
- The city was finally defeated in a joint bid by Arch rivals Bijapur, golkunda, berar etc and was ransacked badly to the present state. THANK YOU.
